Complete EGW Writings Native on Mac OS!

Up until now, if you wanted to run the EGW Writings software on your Mac, you had to do it through a virtual machine or emulation software such as Parallels or VMWare, etc.  Well I'm pleased to announce that those days are over!

Thanks to an application called WINE (which stands for: Wine Is Not an Emulator), we've been able to compile a user-friendly .dmg that conveniently installs a self-contained .app file. This installed application has WINE embedded into it which allows you to easily place it on your dock, making all of EGW's writings (and the words of the pioneers) available at your fingertips at all times!

I just compiled the first beta of this file this morning and uploaded it to The White Estate's server. If you're interested in beta testing it, let me know and I'll see what I can do.  We're especially looking to test it on Tiger and see if things run smoothly there.  The current plan is to make this available to the general public for the holiday season by the end of the year!

If you're interested to know more about how this project originally started, you can view Michael Prewitt's blog post about it.

I want to give a special thank you to Mike Kronenberg from Switzerland who modified the WineBottler code just to accomodate this project!

Tim, great stuff! I'm glad to see its finally coming to OS X... I have to nitpick though, its not even close to 'native' yet.

Hopefully the EGW Estate will come to its senses and allow a fully native app to be written eventually. Until then, I doubt it will get widespread adoption.

lol you're so funny, Evan.  Yes I do agree with you.  This is just a short-term option that will allow many to avoid the price tag and inconvenience of a virtual machine solution (if you can call it that) until the White Estate makes a more fully-mac option. Smile

I would like to test it. How can I get set up?

I greatly appreciate your wok on this and it brings hope to Mac users out there whom are struggling without EGW material on their computers. I'd even been tempted to try and develop modules for MacSword just to try and get EGW on the system without some complicated back-bending.

That said, if you'd like a test on a Snow Leopard platform, sign me up!

Great work on making an easy to install solution, Tim! WineBottler was a great resource to find, and the implementation is great. The beta 2 works very well.

I, too, hope that eventually we will get a true native app. And not only that, but something modern ... with cloud-based note sharing and subscribing to friends' notes (see what your friends have said about what you are currently reading ... would be the killer feature for me), beautiful typography, advanced research tools (click any word or phrase in any of her writings, and see all the references for all the variations of it, or get statistical suggestions of similar documents based on common key words, etc.). Surely the church as the talent to do it. It's just pooling the necessary resources.

Hey Tim, can I get the EGW software? I'll beta test it, and I'm trying to use it for Messiah's Mansion as well to develop the Sanctuary Bible Study and Seminars for post-tour followup.
